Ben Berlin Tanz-Orchester, Refraingesang: Leo Monosson - Erst kommt ein grosses Fragezeichen [First Comes A Big Question Mark] Slow-Fox a.d. Tonfilm “Die Drei von der Tankstelle” [The Three From The Gas Station] (Heymann-Gilbert), Grammophon 1930 (German) NOTE: Ben BERLIN [né Hermann Biek in 1896 in Tallinn, Estonia – d. 1944 in London, UK]. Estonian bandleader who had his heyday in Berlin during the last years of existence of the Weimar Republic. He left Reval (Tallinn) in the late 1920s for Berlin, where he founded one of the most popular dance bands on the demanding German dance music market. He was considered as equal to such Berlin dance floor giants as Paul Godwin, Dajos Bela, Julian Fuhs, Marek Weber or Ilja Livshakoff’s orchestras. Unfortunately, his success was short-lived, as a Jew he decided to leave Germany in 1933 heading for Holland, Austria, France and finally United Kingdom. In London, however, where already Swing was a king on the British dance floors, Ben Berlin could not find place for his orchestra, whose style of playing was still rooted in the Roaring Twenties. He died of a heart attack, sitting at his desk in London. The illustrations for this movie are some covers of the German music magazine and dance-bar posters from the Weimar Republic years.
