Pyotr Leshchenco - Our garden has faded (The Autumn Mirage) [Завял наш бедный сад (Осенний мираж)] Tango (A.Suchanov) & Orchestra Bellaccord, Bellaccord-Electro 1937, Latvija NOTE: This wonderful autumn farewell tango has three versions recorded by Pyotr Leschenco: the earliest was cut in Riga, the capital city of Latvija in 1937 (during the 1930s Leschenco often performed in Latvija) two later were recorded in Bucharest and in Vienna (both in 1939). I think, the Latvijan version is the best, for it was recorded during Leschenco’s “golden years” of singing. The two later versions present a somewhat “tired” voice of the great singer – perhaps caused by the end of his prosperity era, when during the decade of 1930s Pyotr Leschenco was considered as one of the best Russian romance and Tango performers in the world. In that time he was also very successful in the commercial sense, his records sold in tens thousands throughout Europe and he was a prosperous owner of the night clubs in Bucharest and Riga. All this ended with outbreak of the 2nd WW. Leschenco and his wife Vera were targets of various political discriminations when Romania (where they lived after their emigration from the Soviet Russia) became an ally of the Third Reich and a war enemy of Moscow. Similarily, both of them were considered the “suspicious element” by the Soviets when the war was ended and in 1945 Romania got incorporated into a communist block. Finally, Vera was imprisoned in a Soviet work camp and Pyotr died in 1954 in a communist prison hospital in Romania.
